Comedy Analysis: "The Wallet" by Team 2

THE WALLET SEQUENCE

       In the
Spongebob Squarepants' Season 2 episode 31, "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III", Spongebob and Patrick are watching over the Merma-lair. There, they accidentally release the second arch-nemesis of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy: Man-Ray. This prompts them to rehabilitate him to becoming a better person by doing a series of lessons. This is where this scene takes center stage in helping the villain change.

1.  Status and progression / KENNETH

In the beginning of the clip, Spongebob gives the first lesson which is helping Man-Ray return a wallet to Patrick. However, when the villain tries to hand it back, Patrick states that it's not his. This prompts Man-Ray into persuading that it is indeed his. And despite showing his ID in his wallet, it would mean it is his wallet. But Patrick says, "It's not my wallet." In response, Man-Ray gets frustrated and threatens to rip his arms off. His aggression would carry out in the next part.

Next section goes to Patrick carrying a box where Man-Ray has to help him carry. But after three attempts at trying to do a good deed, it escalates into a brutal beatdown by Man-Ray. Patrick begs Spongebob to stop him by using the tickling belt that kept him in check, but Man-Ray continued to savagely beat him until the next scene, Patrick is in a wheelchair with caste covering his injuries.

2.  Situation and status / TNIYA

The reason this scene is comical is because of the situation that the characters are in. SpongeBob and Patrick are trying to teach Manray to be a good person but as they are giving him the lessons he keeps messing up because the person SpongeBob is using as an example to help Manray out is super clueless about what he is doing. It makes the scene super funny because we as an audience get why Manray is failing but the characters in the scene don’t get why he keeps messing up. For example, the audience gets why Manray has an angry outburst when Patrick refuses to take back his wallet but, in the scene, he still gets punished with the tickle belt by SpongeBob.

3.  Exaggeration / SELIMA

The exaggeration in this SpongeBob clip makes it hilarious because once Man-Ray gets fed up there’s a big shift in attitude from being “Pretend nice” to showing his true colors. As the tension rises the exaggeration of man rays anger and frustration causes him to beat Patrick senseless which is funny because of how extreme Man-Ray’s outburst was. The music of the belt adds to the contrast of the man-rays outburst because while there’s joyful and happy music playing Patrick is getting beat up which adds to the humor of the scene.

4.  Expectation / AUSTIN

In this sequence Manray tries to give Patrick his wallet that he dropped. We all expect Patrick to take the wallet but then Patrick says “that's not my wallet” catching everyone and Manray off guard. Manray insists that the wallet is Patricks and even shows him his ID card, we then think that with this proof that it is his wallet Patrick will take it but to everyone's surprise Patrick denies the wallet once more resulting in Manray’s angry outburst.

5.  Timing / SELIMA

The timing in this clip is slow and calm at first but then as Man-Ray gets more frustrated there’s a build-up to his final outburst. This makes the clip hilarious because you can see the built-up frustration in Man-Ray as the scene goes on and then the timing of the outburst adds to the climax. When the happy music comes in and he proceeds to beat Patrick it adds to the humor because the timing of the music doesn’t match with the action.
