Team 02: Character Facial Expression Analysis
KENNETH
This scene is from the original Spiderman from 2002. It shows Peter Parker outside in New York City, finding himself in a large crowd surrounding something. The moment he checks it out, everything he felt began to fade.
This is the most important aspect of what makes Spiderman's character strong. The death of Uncle Ben. In this film, Uncle Ben was shot by a burglar whom Peter had met prior to the incident after being paid a small sum in his job as a wrestler.
The scene starts when Peter is seeing a crowd in his way. He starts to grow curious as to what happened.
Even without seeing who was it, Peter shouts "That's my uncle!" that would firmly justify his reaction.
For the first time, Peter feels something that he could never believe would happen. Losing someone close to family.

-Looking down
-Eyes squinted
-Tears rolling down his cheek
-Mouth frowning slightly
-Face muscles squishing inwards
By this camera shot, looking down on Uncle Ben slowly dying. Peter's face is squished, trying to hold back the tears dripping down to his cheeks. You could barely see his eyes and slowly see how torn he looks.
The next part would have him get angry, filled with rage when a cop tracked the shooter somewhere nearby. This prompts Peter to go after the one who shot Uncle Ben. Looking upwards with his eyes slowly targeting the man in question. He transitioned from sad to anger.
-Muscles on his cheek lessen
-His eyes aiming upwards in a stern look
-His mouth showing a neutral shape, becoming more in line with being angry.
This is the most important moment in the character in general. And regardless of any interpretation, whether being in the movies or shows; Uncle Ben in most incarnation dies and that is what helps Peter realize his own motivation to become the hero he is now. He became Spiderman.
NIAH
- inner brows raise - lips purse- body language is closed in and breaking down
- starting to cry - expression becomes more tense and downcast
- Loki’s body language is stiff as he walks up to the Allfather, which adds to the build-up of his grief when he learns the truth of his origins.
In this scene, the way Loki shows sadness and grief is unique because he mixes it with anger. His eyebrows are halfway between turning downward for the anger emotion and turning upward for the sad emotion. His mouth is still downward but his teeth are showing in a way that implies that there’s a bit of anger along with sadness.
