Team 02: Character Facial Expression Analysis

  1. Main Characteristics: - furrowed brows - frown - droopy facial movement Understanding facial expression is important because the best kind acting comes from showing, not telling. When we see a character being droopy in body language and with a downward facial expression, we know their sad or depressed.

KENNETH This scene is from the original Spiderman from 2002. It shows Peter Parker outside in New York City, finding himself in a large crowd surrounding something. The moment he checks it out, everything he felt began to fade.
This is the most important aspect of what makes Spiderman's character strong. The death of Uncle Ben. In this film, Uncle Ben was shot by a burglar whom Peter had met prior to the incident after being paid a small sum in his job as a wrestler.
The scene starts when Peter is seeing a crowd in his way. He starts to grow curious as to what happened.
Even without seeing who was it, Peter shouts "That's my uncle!" that would firmly justify his reaction.

For the first time, Peter feels something that he could never believe would happen. Losing someone close to family.
-Looking down -Eyes squinted -Tears rolling down his cheek -Mouth frowning slightly -Face muscles squishing inwards By this camera shot, looking down on Uncle Ben slowly dying. Peter's face is squished, trying to hold back the tears dripping down to his cheeks. You could barely see his eyes and slowly see how torn he looks.
The next part would have him get angry, filled with rage when a cop tracked the shooter somewhere nearby. This prompts Peter to go after the one who shot Uncle Ben. Looking upwards with his eyes slowly targeting the man in question. He transitioned from sad to anger. -Muscles on his cheek lessen -His eyes aiming upwards in a stern look -His mouth showing a neutral shape, becoming more in line with being angry. This is the most important moment in the character in general. And regardless of any interpretation, whether being in the movies or shows; Uncle Ben in most incarnation dies and that is what helps Peter realize his own motivation to become the hero he is now. He became Spiderman.

  1. In this scene we see Steven start to unravel and reveals all of the things he has been bottling up in side for so long when he comes in the room everyone is concerned because of how he’s been acting the last couple of days and we can see him become increasingly tired anxious and nervous until he fully loses control. He is trying to make them not worry but is getting worse and worse, all of the trauma he has dealt with is messing with his mental health and he doesn’t know how to fix that
  2. When the other characters start expressing their worry about his behavior he blows it off and tries to seem like he’s okay and after they push some more he gets angry at them for caring and lashes out.

The entire scene built up to Steven crashing into his sadness it’s starts intense and gets worse as we see him have a break down but then towards the end we see his shoulders fall and his eyes get droopy, he slouches in on him self and instantly you can feel his sadness cause it’s such a stark difference from his usually personality. If you are look at his face we see his eyes looking down and his eyebrows are pushed together like he’s trying to keep himself from crying. The scene is very emotional and it was a great way for the should to show you a different side of the character.

  3. SELIMA

  1. This scene is from the movie Thor and it focuses on Loki learning about who or what he really is and why he was taken in the first place.
Loki’s expressions in the scene are a mix of confusion, anger, and sadness because he now knows that he is a frost giant. Frost giants are seen as monsters and brutal in Asgard which adds to Loki’s meltdown. Furthermore, he learns that the reason he was taken at first was to try and make peace with the frost giant but that was no longer an option. You can see how absolutely devastating this news is to Loki as he begins to tear up and he begins to twist the All-father’s words as he spirals into complete despair.

    1. Loki’s expression in this scene demonstrates sadness because his eyes are watery. Then His eyebrows are scrunched up but angled down. Finally, His mouth is turned downward which implies that he is filled with sadness and Anguish.
  2. Loki’s body language is stiff as he walks up to the Allfather, which adds to the build-up of his grief when he learns the truth of his origins.

In this scene, the way Loki shows sadness and grief is unique because he mixes it with anger. His eyebrows are halfway between turning downward for the anger emotion and turning upward for the sad emotion. His mouth is still downward but his teeth are showing in a way that implies that there’s a bit of anger along with sadness.
